The rough woodlouse, Porcellio scaber, is a useful starting species for learning to maintain a litter-fed isopod colony. A covered damp refuge, a less-wet area, and food that lasts between checks matter more than an elaborate display. Our beginner rating is a practical assessment, not a biological guarantee.

Appearance and identification

BMIG describes a rough, strongly textured body, usually slate gray but with many color variants. Adults may reach about 17 mm. A rough back helps identification, but a mottled or orange animal is not automatically a particular named captive morph.

This is a woodlouse rather than a ball-forming pill bug. Compare Armadillidium vulgare if rolling behavior is what you want to observe. Giant Canyon is another Porcellio, with a broader outline and a different tail-tip shape in identification guidance.

Enclosure and substrate

Use a secure ventilated container with room for more than one hide. Build a substrate containing decomposing plant resources and cover it with leaves. Plain coir can hold water but should not be treated as the colony's complete diet.

Moisture, temperature, and ventilation

Give the colony moisture choices. Water the sheltered end deliberately, then inspect below cover before the next addition. A dry exposed surface is acceptable only while usable damp shelter remains available.

Natural records show P. scaber in a wide range of habitats, including relatively dry places. That should not become an instruction to dry its entire bin. Keep cultures out of direct sun and inspect drying more frequently after a room-temperature change. Avoid adopting a broad commercial “arid” temperature range as a tested upper limit for your colony.

Food, calcium, and protein

Maintain decomposing leaves as the base food, with decaying wood and a known-source calcium supplement available. Offer small supplemental portions at one inspection point and remove what spoils. Adjust to consumption rather than trying to increase breeding through a large protein input.

The feeding guide helps distinguish continuous resources from occasional supplements. In a display, do not assume reptile waste supplies everything the culture needs; check whether the litter layer is actually being consumed and replaced.

Breeding and colony maintenance

Keep one documented stock line per culture when identity matters. Monitor juveniles under a designated hide, food consumption, and the condition of the substrate. A colony producing young needs enough accessible cover and food for smaller animals too.

Use observations to decide when to expand the culture or partially refresh depleted substrate. Neither an adult group huddled together nor a quiet week proves crowding or reproductive failure. Keep a backup before introducing animals to a display where they may be eaten.

Common problems and FAQ

Are orange rough woodlice Powder Orange?

No. Powder Orange is associated with Porcellionides pruinosus. Preserve the scientific name and supplier's line label; color is not sufficient identification.

Why do they crowd the damp end?

Check whether the other shelters offer suitable substrate and cover. Aggregation can be normal. If the refuge itself is dry or all surrounding ground is saturated, use the moisture diagnostic.

Can I mix wild and captive animals?

Keep incoming stock separate while assessing identification and health. Mixing makes provenance and any later problem harder to trace. See quarantine and hygiene.

What if a normally productive colony starts declining?

Review recent water, heating, feeding, and substrate changes using the mortality checklist. Do not immediately replace the whole culture or add more food.
