Isopod Terrarium: Substrate, Plants & Maintenance
Build an isopod terrarium around usable substrate, leaf cover, a moisture gradient, and maintenance access. Plants and cleanup crews do not make it self-cleaning.

Decide whose habitat you are building
An isopod-only display can be designed around the colony. A tank shared with a reptile or amphibian must first meet that animal's requirements. A cleanup crew is not a reason to change the whole tank to conditions unsuitable for its main inhabitant.
Choose the colony before buying substrate and plants. Powder Blue and Zebra do not represent interchangeable care requirements. Keep a separate reserve culture if display animals may be eaten.

Give each layer a job
Organic substrate should hold useful moisture without remaining waterlogged. Litter above it is food and cover, not merely a finishing decoration. Bark provides an inspectable shelter. A damp moss-covered refuge can help retain moisture at one end while other areas are less wet.
In planted vivaria, a drainage reservoir and separator can keep accumulated water below the substrate. NEHERP's construction guide describes that approach. A reservoir needs monitoring and a way to remove excess water; if water rises into the substrate, the separation no longer performs its intended job.
Do not install a drainage layer solely because a diagram includes one. A simple culture bin and a heavily watered planted display have different needs.
Plant around maintenance
Leave access to a hide, a feeding spot, and the damp zone. Dense planting may look established while making inspection difficult. Select plants compatible with the intended moisture and light, and check their source and treatment history before installation.
Some isopods can nibble live plants. The Bio Dude specifically notes this for zebras. Delicate new growth may therefore be a poor match for a display colony. A cleanup crew label is not a plant-safety guarantee.
Establish and observe
Run the habitat long enough to understand how quickly its refuge dries, where water accumulates, and whether the plants settle. Introduce the crew near cover, not onto an exposed basking area.
NEHERP describes an establishment period measured in weeks for its systems. Readiness is not established by a calendar alone: check the primary animal's environmental requirements and whether the crew persists. Avoid assuming that a disappearing food portion proves the entire ecosystem is stable.
A routine that keeps the display usable
During checks, inspect moisture below the surface, replenish consumed litter, remove spoiled supplements, and watch the reservoir if present. Remove significant waste and uneaten animal food rather than expecting the crew to handle unlimited inputs.
Record a few useful observations: watering, unusual odor, food consumption, and whether juveniles appear. A change in these observations is more actionable than trying to count every animal.
FAQ
Can a terrarium be maintenance-free?
No. Water, plant growth, waste inputs, and population balance change. A living cleanup crew reduces some work; it does not eliminate oversight.
Should I add springtails?
They can complement isopods in compatible conditions. The isopods and springtails guide explains the division of work and limits.
Why is the surface moldy?
Review excess food, persistent saturation, and airflow. Do not assume adding more animals will correct the cause.
