Why Are My Isopods Dying?

Investigate isopod deaths with a practical checklist for moisture, heat, ventilation, substrate, feeding, calcium, contamination, and recent moves.

Direct answerFor repeated or sudden deaths, first check temperature at the bin, a usable damp refuge, flooding, ventilation, and recent additions. Remove an obvious hazard promptly. Record the pattern before changing food or supplements; deaths alone do not identify a disease or calcium deficiency.

An occasional dead adult and several fresh deaths after a move are different problems. Begin by recording how many animals you found, whether adults or juveniles are affected, and what changed. Look gently under a familiar hide; repeatedly digging through the colony can injure animals and makes comparisons harder.

Check immediate environmental hazards

Moisture: inspect below the litter at both ends. Terrestrial isopods need access to moisture; a misted lid can coexist with dry substrate. Restore a covered damp area if the refuge has dried. If animals are trapped in standing water, provide access to firm, damp substrate and remove the pooled water without washing the colony away.

Temperature: measure at the enclosure and review recent peaks, not just today's room reading. Sun through a window, a heater, or a changed shelf position deserves attention. Remove the source of overheating and return the bin to stable conditions; do not use ice or abrupt chilling as a correction. Species-specific keeper ranges describe working conditions, not guaranteed survival limits.

Ventilation: check for blocked mesh, condensation and saturation throughout the bin, or a lid changed during transport. Restore screened air exchange while keeping the damp shelter. Adding large vents all at once can cause the opposite problem.

Substrate and possible contamination

Review newly added soil, bark, moss, leaves, plants, water containers, and cleaning products. Was anything collected from a treated garden or roadside? Was the spray bottle previously used for another product? Boiling an item is not evidence that pesticide residues have been removed.

If a particular addition is suspect, stop using that batch and isolate the affected culture. Prepare a clean container with known-source materials and matching shelter conditions if animals need moving. Do not distribute its substrate or animals into healthy colonies during the investigation. Keep the product label or source record so an experienced keeper or an invertebrate-aware veterinarian can assess the actual exposure.

Check whether substrate still offers porous, moisture-retaining material and decomposing resources. A bin mostly filled with exhausted fiber and waste may need a partial refresh. Preserve established material where safe; a complete replacement is justified by a specific hazard, not by the presence of normal decay.

Food, calcium, and molting

Maintain a leaf-litter base, an accessible calcium source, and modest supplemental feeding. Check actual consumption. Extra protein is not an emergency antidote and uneaten rich food can create another maintenance problem.

Calcium matters to the exoskeleton, but a dead or partly molted animal does not demonstrate calcium deficiency. Moisture and other stressors also deserve review. Avoid forcefully peeling an animal out of a molt. Record whether molt-related losses recur after the environment is stabilized; the food guide covers normal supplementation.

Crowding, waste, and colony moves

A group sharing one hide may be selecting moisture or cover rather than demonstrating overcrowding. Check whether other refuges are usable, whether litter is being exhausted, and whether juveniles have protected feeding space. Expand or split a productive culture when resources and maintenance cannot keep pace; do not rely on an arbitrary animals-per-liter limit.

After shipping or a substrate change, keep handling low and record conditions at arrival. Use the supplier's established conditions as context. Shipping stress, temperature exposure, and changed moisture can overlap, so deaths after a move do not prove the new food was responsible. Follow the starter-colony routine and retain supplier contact details.

FAQ

Are they dead or molting?

An empty shed can resemble part of an animal. Observe gently and compare with an intact body before counting a death. Avoid repeated poking, squeezing, or dismantling a shelter around a vulnerable animal.

Should I add springtails?

Springtails can help process fungal and organic resources, but they do not correct heat, desiccation, contamination, or a disease. Establish the cause of decline before adding more animals.

Why is only one species declining?

Species, colony size, recent transport, and microhabitat use differ. Compare actual conditions with its profile, including Rubber Ducky, Dairy Cow, or Clown, rather than treating a healthy neighboring bin as proof all conditions are safe.

When should I seek help?

Seek species-specific advice when losses continue after obvious hazards are corrected, or promptly when contamination is suspected. Supply photographs, temperatures, the timeline, and material sources. This checklist cannot diagnose an infection from symptoms alone.
