Isopod Enclosure Too Wet or Too Dry?
Read the substrate, shelter, and animal distribution to distinguish a dry refuge from a waterlogged bin and restore a useful moisture gradient.

Before adding or withholding water, inspect where the animals live. The lid, room hygrometer, and exposed top layer can give different impressions from the substrate beneath bark. This page helps correct an existing problem; the moisture-gradient guide covers building the setup from the start.
Read the enclosure in three places
Check beneath the damp-end hide, at the transition between zones, and below the drier surface. Use the same inspection points so the next observation is comparable. Record when water was added, which end received it, and whether the room or ventilation recently changed.

Animals clustering, climbing, or hiding may reflect cover, disturbance, or normal behavior too. Use those observations alongside physical checks rather than declaring a humidity emergency from one photograph.
Fix a dry refuge
Add water gradually to the refuge area, allowing it to soak in. Do not flood the bin to compensate for missed maintenance. Replace the hide and litter, then check whether moisture persists below them. In a shallow or very fibrous substrate, water may disappear quickly from the surface without creating a lasting refuge.
If the same area keeps drying, review substrate depth and composition, excessive vents, heating, and the size of the sheltered patch. Change one routine variable at a time after the immediate water shortage is corrected. Never eliminate all air exchange just to keep the lid misted.

Fix a waterlogged enclosure
Pause scheduled misting and inspect the lowest part of the bin. Remove accessible pooled water without flushing or crushing animals. Keep a firm, damp refuge available while the surrounding substrate recovers. If a localized portion is slumped and unusable, replace that portion with known-source, appropriately moistened substrate rather than automatically disturbing everything.
Increase screened ventilation in small steps and monitor the damp end. Avoid a fan or unregulated heater aimed at the enclosure. If condensation persists, check room temperature as well as water input; droplets alone are not proof of stagnant conditions.
Remove spoiled supplements while correcting the water balance. Persistent mold or fungus gnats may share the same excess-food or wet-surface conditions, but neither proves the entire substrate needs to be dried.
Species and genera are context, not a watering schedule
Breeder guidance for Clown and Zebra commonly emphasizes drier surface zones alongside a damp retreat. Rubber Ducky care places particular emphasis on a stable moist refuge. Those examples should not become a rule that every member of a genus needs identical conditions.
BMIG records Giant Canyon's parent species in organic, sheltered habitats such as manure and compost heaps. An “arid-friendly” sales label therefore should not be interpreted as permission to keep the entire culture dry. Likewise, adaptable Powder Blue still needs access to moisture.
FAQ
What humidity percentage should I target?
Use your species profile and supplier's conditions as context, but inspect substrate first. One air reading cannot show the conditions beneath every hide. This guide does not assign a universal percentage to all isopods.
How often should I water?
Water according to refuge condition. Record how long it stays damp through your normal room cycle, and inspect again after changes to heat, vents, or substrate. Another keeper's weekly schedule may not fit your bin.
Should the dry side be completely dry?
The goal is a usable choice of microhabitats with protected routes between them. A bare, dusty half beside soaked moss offers less useful shelter than a gradual transition through litter and depth.
Can springtails fix the water balance?
No. Springtails also depend on suitable microhabitats. Adding them does not remove pooled water or restore a dry refuge.
