Isopod Quarantine & Culture Hygiene
Reduce avoidable transfers between isopod cultures with quarantine, source records, separate tools, safe material handling, and a response plan.

Quarantine is a period of separation and observation. It cannot prove that an isopod culture is free of every organism, but it reduces avoidable transfers and gives you a baseline before new stock joins a collection or bioactive enclosure.
Decide what stays separate
Treat each incoming isopod culture as its own unit. Keep it away from established colonies and do not share loose substrate, leaves, hides, or feeding tools during the observation period. New plants, wood, and leaf litter also deserve a source and preparation plan because they can carry organisms or chemical residues.

Prepare the quarantine culture
Use a simple enclosure with the same essential functions as a permanent culture: organic substrate, leaf litter, secure cover, a damp refuge, a less-wet area, and protected ventilation. Simplicity should improve observation, not remove resources the animals need.
Label the container before transfer. Record supplier, acquisition date, exact name, estimated count, source conditions, and visible concerns. Photograph the label and a representative animal without prolonging exposure.
There is no universal quarantine duration that guarantees safety for every pest or disease. Use a defined observation period appropriate to your collection risk, and restart your assessment if unexplained deaths or new organisms appear.
Tool and hand hygiene
Dedicated forceps, spoons, and feeding dishes are ideal for valuable or troubled cultures. When tools must be shared, remove organic debris, clean them with an appropriate method away from occupied enclosures, rinse or dry as the material requires, and ensure no cleaner residue reaches animals.
Work from established low-concern cultures toward quarantine or problem cultures, not in the opposite direction. Wash hands between groups and change disposable gloves when used. Do not spray cleaners, fragrances, or aerosols near open cultures.
Keep food containers closed and use a clean scoop rather than returning a tool that touched substrate. Small routines matter because mites, eggs, springtails, and substrate particles can travel on damp equipment.
Leaves, wood, and plants
Collect natural materials only where collection is legal and where pesticide, road runoff, pet treatment, and industrial contamination are unlikely. Correct tree identification matters when selecting litter. The leaf-litter guide covers source evaluation and preparation choices.
No preparation method makes an unknown contaminated site acceptable. Heat treatment may reduce living hitchhikers but cannot remove chemical residues. Purchased materials also need source records rather than an assumption of sterility.
Plants for a display can carry soil organisms and pesticide residues. Follow the plant supplier's information, remove inappropriate potting media when safe for the plant, and observe separately before introduction. Do not use a pesticide-treated plant as a shortcut into an occupied invertebrate enclosure.
What to monitor
During routine checks, record:
- adult survival and activity under the normal observation hide;
- juvenile sightings and whether several size classes persist;
- food use and recurring spoilage;
- mites, flies, unusual fungal growth, or attached organisms;
- moisture and temperature changes;
- recent maintenance or new materials.

If a problem appears
Keep the culture isolated. Stop transferring material and identify the symptom before acting. Remove obviously spoiled food or dead animals, verify that the refuge is damp but not flooded, and document the timeline.

Do not dispose of an entire culture outdoors. Captive isopods and associated organisms should not be released. Follow local waste rules and contain material that must be discarded.
Moving animals out of quarantine
Move stock only after the culture has remained stable through the planned observation period and any concern has been resolved. Transfer animals and only the material required by your husbandry plan; do not merge whole substrates merely to save time.
