Bioactive Cleanup Crew Compatibility Guide

Choose isopods and springtails for a bioactive enclosure by matching moisture, temperature, food, predation risk, plants, and backup-culture needs.

Direct answerA habitat-first checklist for deciding whether a cleanup crew belongs in a particular bioactive enclosure.

A cleanup crew is compatible only when the enclosure supports the crew and the primary animal can safely share space with it. “Tropical,” “arid,” and “beginner species” are starting descriptions, not compatibility tests. Evaluate the habitat at substrate level and preserve a separate culture before introducing animals.

If one factor is unknown, test conservatively with a reserve culture intact. A cleanup crew does not replace substrate maintenance, removal of uneaten animal food, or health monitoring.

Match moisture at the microhabitat level

An enclosure can have dry air above ground and a damp pocket below bark, or visible condensation over substrate that is unsuitable. Inspect where the isopods and springtails will shelter. Use the moisture-gradient guide to build a protected refuge without saturating the full display.

Porcellionides pruinosus and its Powder Blue and Powder Orange morphs are often selected for active cultures. Their reputation does not make a dry enclosure self-correcting. Zebra isopods may be chosen for visibility, but their care still requires access to moisture.

Consider the primary animal

Research the natural behavior and veterinary care requirements of the enclosure's main inhabitant first. Some reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, and other invertebrates will eat isopods or springtails. Predation may be harmless enrichment in one system and the rapid loss of an expensive culture in another.

Do not add a large, protein-responsive isopod to an enclosure with eggs, very small animals, or vulnerable resting stages without species-specific evidence and a risk plan. Compatibility claims from a seller should identify both the cleanup species and the primary animal; “safe for bioactive” is too broad.

Isopods and springtails have different roles

Isopods fragment larger decaying material and use leaf litter, wood, fungi, and supplements. Springtails use smaller resources and graze fungi and microbes. Together they can occupy complementary niches, but neither group makes waste disappear.

The isopods and springtails guide explains how to maintain both. Keep a separate springtail culture as well as an isopod culture so a decline can be replenished without buying and introducing unobserved stock directly into the display.

Establish before introduction

Start the isopods in a simple culture where feeding and juvenile recruitment can be seen. Move only part of a stable colony. A group that is merely surviving after shipping is not yet a reliable source population.

Seed the display before the primary animal when the husbandry plan allows, giving the crew time to enter substrate and cover. Continue providing leaf litter and refuge after introduction. Follow the starting-colony workflow and quarantine new stock before it reaches a mature display.

Monitor after introduction

Set a baseline for leaf cover, visible crew, plant condition, and leftover food. Then inspect comparable locations at normal maintenance intervals. A temporary drop in surface sightings can reflect hiding, but persistent absence combined with disappearing litter activity may indicate predation or unsuitable microclimate.

Look for:

  • a damp refuge that persists without waterlogging;
  • several crew size classes over time;
  • litter consumption and replenishment needs;
  • uneaten primary-animal food that attracts pests;
  • nibbling on seedlings or sensitive plants;
  • population booms that require food or space reassessment.

Change one condition at a time when possible. Adding more isopods repeatedly without correcting habitat or predation only hides the reason the previous group disappeared.

When a separate display is better

Collector species and valuable lines are often easier to monitor outside a mixed enclosure. Rubber Ducky is best established as a dedicated colony rather than treated as a default cleanup crew. Magic Potion stock may carry line history worth preserving separately.

Choosing a simpler or less valuable crew for the display is not a judgment about the animal's quality. It is risk management: the display and the breeding colony have different goals.
