Isopod Pests: Mold, Mites & Fungus Gnats
Identify and respond to common isopod-culture mold, mites, and fungus gnats by correcting food and moisture conditions without unsafe blanket treatments.

Mold, mites, and small flies are not one diagnosis. They can arrive with organic materials, expand around excess food, or become visible after a moisture change. Identify the pattern, protect other cultures, and correct the supporting condition before reaching for a chemical treatment.
Start with observations, not a label
Record where the organism appears, what it is using, and whether isopods are dying. Photograph it if possible. Compare activity at the food dish, damp refuge, lid, and substrate surface. A few organisms on a perishable supplement require a different response from repeated mortality throughout the colony.
Avoid applying insecticides, miticides, essential oils, or household cleaners inside an occupied culture. Isopods are arthropods; a broad product intended to kill other arthropods may also harm the colony. This guide does not diagnose pathogens or replace specialist veterinary advice for a valuable collection.
Mold on food or wood
Fungal growth is part of decomposition, and a small bloom on leaf litter or new wood is not automatically an emergency. Mold that repeatedly covers rich supplements usually means the portion is larger than the colony can consume or the feeding spot remains too wet.
Remove the spoiled supplement, reduce the next serving, and place food where it can be inspected. Keep permanent litter resources separate from short-lived foods. The isopod food guide explains that distinction.
If the entire enclosure smells foul or the substrate is waterlogged, review the moisture gradient and ventilation. Do not dry the whole culture abruptly; preserve a safe damp refuge while correcting saturation.
Mites
Many mites are scavengers or fungal feeders rather than direct parasites. Large numbers around food can still signal chronic overfeeding and can spread between cultures on tools or hands. Their presence alone does not establish that they caused an isopod death.
Remove excess food, clean the feeding surface, and use smaller portions. Isolate the culture from clean colonies while observing whether numbers decline. Separate tools reduce transfer. Do not introduce a purchased predatory organism unless you can verify its identity, husbandry, and risk to juvenile isopods.
Mites attached tightly to living animals or associated with ongoing deaths deserve more caution. Preserve clear photos and seek identification from an experienced invertebrate veterinarian, diagnostician, or relevant specialist rather than treating every moving speck alike.
Fungus gnats and other small flies
Adult fungus gnats are small dark flies often associated with consistently moist organic media. Larvae develop in damp material and use fungi and decaying organic matter. Adults around several nearby plant pots may not originate in the isopod culture, so inspect the room as well as the bin.
Reduce uneaten rich food, improve airflow if the enclosure is stagnant, and allow the less-wet zone to function while protecting the colony's damp refuge. Sticky cards can monitor adults outside the enclosure, but position them where isopods and other animals cannot contact the adhesive.
Do not flood or fully dry a culture to chase larvae. Physical exclusion, sanitation around the culture, and correction of excess resources are safer first steps.
Where springtails fit
Springtails use fungi and decaying resources and are commonly maintained alongside isopods. They may compete with some nuisance growth, but they are not a guaranteed cure for mites or flies. Adding more organisms without correcting excess food leaves the underlying condition unchanged.

A proportionate response ladder
- Observe: identify the location, resource, and trend.
- Remove the attractant: take out spoiled or excess supplements.
- Correct conditions: maintain a gradient while improving stagnant airflow or feeding practice.
- Contain: isolate the culture and use separate tools.
- Escalate: seek reliable identification when organisms attach to isopods or mortality continues.
Avoid a complete substrate replacement for a mild localized issue. A full restart disturbs animals, may discard juveniles, and removes established microhabitat. Reserve it for a defined contamination or continuing severe problem after safer measures fail.
Prevention
Inspect purchased leaf litter, wood, plants, and cultures before combining them with a collection. Use safe preparation practices for natural materials and keep source records. Portion food according to colony size, remove leftovers, and clean shared tools between enclosures.
