How Long Do Isopods Live? Species and Colony Lifespan
Isopod lifespan depends on species and conditions. Published accounts for Armadillidium vulgare differ; a lasting colony is not proof that its original adults are still alive.

There is no single lifespan for pet isopods
Avoid applying one number to every animal sold as an isopod. Even accounts of the common pillbug, Armadillidium vulgare, give different estimates. The University of Florida states that adults can live two to five years; Animal Diversity Web describes an average around a year and a half, with some living a few years.
Those accounts are not a controlled comparison of identical captive cohorts. Their figures should not be averaged into a supposedly precise expectation. Nor do they establish the lifespan of Rubber Ducky or Panda King trade stock.
Individual age versus colony age
A culture kept for five years may contain descendants rather than its founding adults. Regular births and deaths can occur without an obvious change in the number seen under a hide.
Unless you know when an animal emerged and can track it reliably, you usually do not know its exact age. An adult sold to you may already have spent a substantial part of its life with the breeder. Purchase date is a useful record, but it is not a birth date.
For a breeding log, record first juvenile sightings and broad size groups. Avoid repeatedly handling individuals just to try to establish age.
Why the species label matters
Magic Potion is traded as an A. vulgare line, so species-level biology is relevant background. It still does not guarantee that a particular line will attain the longest lifespan reported for the species.
A hobby name under Cubaris sp. leaves species identity unresolved. A merchant's lifespan claim for that name is a husbandry report, not a formally established species trait. We omit exact longevity promises where the evidence is insufficient.
Conditions worth checking when adults die
One death cannot establish a diagnosis. If losses increase, inspect moisture at the refuge, temperature, ventilation, food deterioration, and any recent additions or construction changes. Check whether multiple age groups are affected.
Do not label a cluster of deaths “old age” merely because a colony has been kept for several months. Conversely, a hidden colony is not necessarily dead. Inspect an accessible hide and look for evidence of continuing activity without overturning all the substrate.

Keep records that answer the right question
Write down supplier identity, arrival size, major maintenance changes, first juveniles, and unusual losses. To assess colony persistence, ask whether resources remain available and new animals continue to appear. To estimate individual lifespan, a known-age cohort is needed.
